CRC understands that a new airport north of the Tagus is “a more sustainable solution”, stating that the project constitutes an “investment that can minimize the financial impact for the country”.

The Central Regional Council (CRC) defended this Tuesday the location of a new airport “north of the Tagus River” as it is the one that “best serves” the interests of the country and the region.

“Everything indicates that the location to the north of the Tagus River is the one that better serves national and regional interests, showing comparative advantages compared to other solutions under study“, says the CRC, in a motion approved unanimously at a meeting held in Coimbra, at the headquarters of the Center’s Regional Coordination and Development Commission.

The regional body headed by João Paulo Fernandes, mayor of Fundão, highlights the importance of “an excellent location given its proximity to road accessibility”, such as the A1, A23, A13 and A15, as well as railways.

At this point, he highlights “the agreements with the new high-speed route, Linha do Norte, Linha da Beira Alta and Linha da Beira Baixa”, in addition to the fact that the recommended location “can place the new airport near a greater number of venues municipal, without moving more than 30 minutes from Lisbon, being able to reach around 4.5 million people in a 75 minute radius“.

On the other hand, the solution advocated by the Center Council contributes “decisively to raising the country’s territorial cohesion indices”, by allowing the construction of the airport “closest, in relative terms, to the NUT III with the lowest population density”.

The CRC also understands that the location north of the Tagus is “a more sustainable solution”, constituting the new airport as “an investment that can minimize the financial impact for the country”, benefiting from “a long-term vision”.
