Mom gave in to exhaustion while nursing her baby after a 17-hour labor. The parents accuse the hospital of having forced the mother to take care of the baby due to a lack of maternity staff.

A newborn baby died Monday in a Rome hospital. Allegedly, the case was due to a lack of staff in the hospital unit, forcing the mother to take care of the child after a prolonged labor. Succumbing to exhaustion, she fell asleep after nursing and the baby ended up suffocating to death.

According to the baby’s parents, the labor lasted 17 hours, leaving the mother exhausted. “She asked them to take the baby to rest for a few hours, but they told her no,” said the girl’s father, quoted by El Mundo.

Presumably, the hospital unit left the child in the care of the mother due to lack of personnel in the maternity ward. While nursing the baby, the mother fell asleep. She “she called me screaming, she told me to run to the hospital, but when I got there there was nothing to do. They told us they tried to revive the baby but didn’t even wake her up.when he opened his eyes they had already taken him away”, describes the father.

Pending the results of the autopsy, the couple have already said that they will take legal action against the hospital, since they believe that the tragedy could have happened to anyone. “Nothing can bring our baby back to us, but we don’t want other parents to go through the same nightmare we did.”

After the death of the baby, the hospital subjected the mother to a drug test, since she was found in a very deep sleep: the result was negative. A judicial investigation is currently underway to determine the causes of the baby’s death, but a source from the hospital unit has already denied that this happened due to the lack of personnel in the maternity ward and made sure that no one forced the mother to take care of the baby.
