The crime of illegal exploitation of precious stones in Mozambique caused the death of a policeman. The agent also had a colleague injured, after an attack by illegal miners.
A Mozambican policeman was killed and another wounded by suspected illegal miners in the Mogovolas district of Nampula, in northern Mozambique, an official source announced Wednesday.
The agents would have been attacked on Sunday after being deployed in an area rich in semi-precious stones to “prevent the illegal activity of the garimpeiros”.
The area is not under concession, so “when the miners entered, the force [policial] He went there to stop the progress of this illegal activity,” but the action “ended in tragedy”said Emanuel Impissa, administrator of Mogovolas, quoted by the local press.
According to witnesses, the agents were attacked with pickaxes after one of the approximately 300 illegal searchers was shot.
The spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Nampula, Zacarias Nacute, said a team had been deployed to the district to investigate the circumstances of the case.
We are also working to locate and capture all the people who were directly linked to this situation so that they are held criminally responsible,” the police concluded.
