The airline Flybe goes bankrupt less than a year after being bought. All flights have been cancelled.

“All Flybe flights to and from the UK are canceled and will not be rescheduled,” read a statement from the airline, which between 2017 and 2019 was led by the current CEO of TAP.

The British company Flybe announced this Saturday the cancellation of its entire operation for having entered into bankruptcy. through a ad posted on social mediaThe company revealed that the insolvency process of the company – of which the current executive director of TAP, Christine Ourmières-Widener, was general director between 2017 and 2019 – is being, as of this Saturday, managed by David Pike and Mike Pink, from Interpath consultancy.

“All Flybe flights to and from the United Kingdom are canceled and will not be rescheduled,” read the statement from the airline, which had already experienced serious financial difficulties in March 2020, due to the paralysis of air traffic caused by the Covid-19. 19 pandemic, before being bought by an American fund.

According to the BBC, a total of around 75,000 passengers had their flights canceled with no possibility of rescheduling for other airlines. This Saturday alone, some 2,500 people had flights scheduled for the airline, with the British Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) advising all passengers not to even go to the airports to try to board their flights.

Calling the bankruptcy of an airline company “sad”, one of the heads of CAA, Paul Smith, assumed that Flybe’s decision would be detrimental to all its employees and customers. “We call on passengers who plan to travel with this airline not to go to the airport, since all Flybe flights are cancelled. For the most up-to-date advice, Flybe customers should visit the CAA website or our Twitter feed for more information.”

The BBC also explains that, of the 321 Flybe employees, 277 are no longer needed and will lose their job.

Unlike in other circumstances where there are canceled flights, the insolvency of one airline does not result in the rescheduling of customer flights on other airlines – and Flybe has already said it is not in a position to help passengers to obtain alternative tickets. excursions.

Even so, alternatives for passengers have already begun to emerge. British Airways already announced that it is supporting Flybe customers who saw their flights canceled, offering discounts on tickets for a set of routes served by that airline: tickets between 50 and 60 pounds, plus taxes, and that include checked luggage of 23 kilograms.

For its part, the public railway company LNER also already announced that Flybe customers who have had their flights canceled can use the railway services free of charge to their destinations, simply by presenting the respective air ticket.

Flybe, a regional airline operating mainly domestic flights within the UK, but also flights to Amsterdam and Geneva, filed for bankruptcy in March 2020, following the aviation crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, many saw the Flybe bankruptcy as a harbinger of a wave of airline bankruptcies in the wake of the pandemic.

However, Flybe was bought by an American fund and returned to activity in April 2022 -not even lasting a year in this new stage-.

However, the CAA has already published a set of specific recommendations for customers affected by the Flybe bankruptcy, which can be found here.
