The Canadian government announced this Friday a new round of sanctions against Russia that has already earned a response from Moscow. A spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, headed by Sergei Lavrov, criticized the new measures, comparing them to the repression that marked the Third Reich period in Germany.

“Canadian sanctions against Russian journalists and artists are comparable to the Third Reich’s attempts to destroy the ‘non-German spirit’ and drown out the voice of reason by burning books and banning newspapers”, wrote Maria Zakharova in a post on the Telegram account.

The Russian spokeswoman also launched an attack on Canadian deputy prime minister and current finance minister under President Justin Trudeau. “Nazi Mikhailo Khomyak could be proud of his granddaughterTrudeau’s deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland,” he added.

On Friday, the Canadian government announced sanctions against 38 people and 16 entities, which it says are “complicit in spreading disinformation and Russian propaganda.” According to Sky News, the sanctions will target figures such as Russian singer Nikolay Victorovich Baskov, but also companies such as the state media group MIA Rossiya Segodnya.
