Communities want presidential veto if mail-in vote loses primacy in elections

The Council of the Portuguese Communities will propose that Marcelo vetoes the legislative initiatives that eliminate the primacy of the vote by mail, in the elections that involve the civic participation of the emigrants.

The Regional Council of Portuguese Communities in Europe will propose to the President of the Republic to veto any legislative initiative that eliminates the primacy of voting by mail in national elections in which emigrants can vote, said its president.

Pedro Rupio was speaking to the Lusa agency at the end of three days of CRCPE meetings in Lisbon, during which meetings were held with the Secretary of State for the Portuguese Communities, political parties and the advisor to the President of the Republic for the sector.

One of the deliberations that arose from these meetings was the proposal to the Permanent Council of the Council of Portuguese Communities (CCP) so that when it meets with the President of the Republic, it can suggest a presidential veto, in case it is presented “an initiative in the Assembly of the Republic that eliminates the primacy of voting by mail in national elections in which the Portuguese communities can vote”.

We know that there will be the possibility of withdrawing this primacy and that, instead of voting by mail as the first option, there will be voting in person. We are very reticent about it and we fear a significant reduction in the electoral participation of the Portuguese communities, so we are moving forward with this recommendation, which we are going to make to the Permanent Council” of the CCP, he said.

Rupio considers that the measure would be a setback, especially at a time when the communities want to see the possibility of voting by mail expanded for the presidential elections, which is not yet possible.

Recently, a PSD bill was presented in the Assembly of the Republic, which aims to extend voting by mail in the presidential and European elections.

This Friday, the CRCPE elected a new board, with Pedro Rupio, who did not run for re-election, to be replaced by Alfredo Stoffelwith Sérgio Tavares as the new secretary.
