Xi Jinping has already arrived in Russia, and regarding the Chinese president’s three-day visit, Vladimir Putin called this meeting “a historic event,” which “reaffirms the special nature of the Russia-China partnership.”

On Monday, which is marked by the Chinese president’s first official visit to Russia since the war in Ukraine began, Putin wrote an opinion piece, published by the Chinese newspaper People’s Daily, in which he says he has “great expectations for the next talks”.

We have no doubt that (China) will give new impetus to our bilateral cooperation. It’s also a great chance to catch up with my good old friend.”

Putin also referred, throughout the text, that “the two peoples have a lot in common” and appreciated “the balanced position in relation to the events in Ukraine, as well as their understanding of the historical background.”

“We welcome China’s willingness to make a significant contribution to resolving the crisis. Like our partners in China, we stand for full compliance with the UN Charter, respect for the norms of international law, including humanitarian law,” he added.

Putin also took the opportunity to warn about nuclear issues, admitting he was “deeply concerned by irresponsible and downright dangerous actions that compromise nuclear security.” And he once again defended the lifting of the sanctions imposed by the countries that side with Ukraine, considered by the Russian president as “illegitimate”.

But Putin was not the only one to write a text about the relationship between the two countries. Also Xi Jinping, who landed this morning on Russian territory, wrote an article, published in the Russian daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta. “Both seek an independent foreign policy,” the Chinese president began, referring to China and Russia.

Xi Jinping also did not put aside the war in Ukraine, nor did he forget the 12-point plan, which he released weeks ago, a document that called for the resumption of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. “China has always maintained an objective and impartial position,” adding that his country “has actively promoted peace talks.”

“There is no simple solution to a complex problem,” he added.
