Alexei Moskalyo, the Russian who fled his home, where he was under house arrest, before learning of the sentence resulting from the investigation into comments critical of Russia, was arrested this Thursday, his lawyer confirmed.

Moskalyo was arrested in Minsk, Belarus, a report that was advanced by the SOTA Project, an independent Russian outlet, and later confirmed by the lawyer. Initially, lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov said that he could not confirm the arrest, but that he suspected this could have happened, since he was unable to contact Moskalyo on Telegram.

The Russian citizen would have escaped from his home on Monday, some 11 hours before learning the verdict of the local court in the city of Yefremov, escaping from the house arrest in which he had been since the beginning of March. Moskalyov was awaiting a verdict on the posts he made on social media criticizing Vladimir Putin’s regime.

The 54-year-old Russian may have entered the radar of the Moscow authorities when his 13-year-old daughter drew a drawing in support of Ukraine in one of the classes. Moskalyo, a single father, has distanced himself from his daughter, who is currently in the custody of the Russian state.

Moskalyo was facing a two-year prison sentence which, with this flight to Belarus, could only get worse.
