Elderly American carrying donation items bludgeoned to death in Mexico

Ruby Lazo, 79, frequently traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, taking donated food, clothing and toys with her.

A 79-year-old American was beaten to death in Mexico while transporting clothing, food and toys that would be donated to those in need in Tijuana.

The case took place in mid-April and Rudy’s body was found on the 19th of that month. The septuagenarian’s family suspected that something had happened once Rudy Lazo had not returned home after delivering merchandise. Shortly after, the Mexican authorities notified the family and explained that the old man had been beaten to death. The mugger will also have stolen Rudy’s van, which has yet to be found.

To NBC Los Angeles, the son and daughter of Rudy Lazo explained that the father made frequent trips from San Bernardino, California, to Tijuana —a journey of about 200 kilometers— to deliver the donated goods. Rudy immigrated to the United States of America in the 1980s. Born in El Salvador, he began working as a truck driver and settled in San Bernardino, Southern California.

He was always a very generous person, he helped everyone,” his son, Juan Carlos, told NBC Los Angeles.

Rudy’s son has traveled to Mexico to identify his father’s body, which he believes being killed during a robbery. “He didn’t deserve this,” Juan Carlos said. “In fact, no human being deserves this.” The septuagenarian’s son also explained that his father planned to build a community center in Tijuana.

The death of Rudy Lazo comes months after the US authorities Alert citizens about the danger of traveling to Mexico, where the number of deaths and kidnappings has increased, mainly in the Mexican state of Baja California, where the city of Tijuana is located. “It’s very dangerous there,” explained Rudy’s daughter, Claudia Hernández. “So dangerous, and he probably thought he wouldn’t get in trouble as an old man.”

It was common for older adults to share several videos related to the delivery of donated goods on the Facebook social network.
