Pulitzer Prizes honor AP for covering Russian siege of Mariupol

The Associated Press has won 2 Pulitzer Prizes for journalism in the categories of public service and photo reporting related to the war in Ukraine, including images from the Mariupol siege.

The Associated Press agency was honored with two Pulitzer Prizes for journalismon Monday, in the categories of public service and photo reporting, related to the war in Ukraine, which include startling images of the Russian siege of Mariupol.

AP journalists were also among the finalists in the photojournalism categories, for their coverage of the political crisis in Sri Lanka and the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on older people.

For the public service award, the jury cited the work of video journalist Mstyslav Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka, video producer Vasilisa Stepanenko and reporter Lori Hinnant. For almost three weeks, the only foreign journalists in Mariupol were the AP, which captured remarkable images of an injured pregnant woman being carried for medical attention and Russian soldiers firing on civilian targets.

Other Pulitzer Prize winners included AL.com of Birmingham, Alabama, for local news and commentary, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Washington Post.

These awards honor the best in journalism in 2022in 15 categories, as well as eight artistic categories, with a focus on books, music and theater.

Those distinguished for public service receive a gold medal, others $15,000.

Deputy Mayor of Mariupol stated that the work of the AP has drawn international attention, which led to pressure on the Russians to open evacuation routes, which saved thousands of lives.

“They informed the world of the human cost of this war in its early days,” AP Executive Editor Julie Pace said during an awards ceremony via Zoom. “They served as a counterbalance to Russian disinformation and helped open a humanitarian exit corridor for Mariupol with his work”, he stressed.

The team of AP photographers honored with the award includes, in addition to Maloletka, Bernat Armangue, Emilio Morenatti, Felipe Dana, Nariman El-Mofty, Rodrigo Abd and Vadim Ghirda.

“Being there was probably more important and critical than ever,” said AP cinematographer David Ake.

Atlantic magazine won an award in the category of explanatory journalismfor Caitlin Dickerson’s investigation into Donald Trump’s policy of separating parents and children at the border.

Other winners included the Wall Street Journal for reporting on public officials holding shares in companies that could benefit from political decisions, and Mississippi Today’s Anna Wolfe for exposing a former governor who gave away public money to friends and family.

Andrew Long Chu of New York Magazine won a Pulitzer for criticism, Nancy Ancrum, Amy Driscoll, Luisa Yanez, Isadora Rangell and Lauren Constantino of the Miami Herald for editorial prose, New York Times contributor Mona Chalabi for her news and comments illustrationsand Gimlet Media staff for radio news.

The prizes were established by the will of publisher Joseph Pulitzer and began to be awarded in 1917.
