A Russian family has decided to change the name of their son, who is called Putin, the surname of the Russian president, according to the civil registry of the Vladimir region, less than 200 kilometers from Moscow.

“The parents returned to our service. They, let’s say, regretted what they did,” said Yekaterina Belous, the head of the Alexandrovsky district civil registry in Vladimir, according to the “New Alexandrovsk City” newspaper, quoted by the Efe agency. This official added that the parents intended to “return the name they gave him when the child was born.”

The Dzhuraev family originally named their son Rasul, but changed it in 2016 at the request of his grandfather, a huge admirer of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. The Dzhuraevs were granted Russian citizenship after fleeing the civil war (1992-1997) that devastated the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan after the fall of the Soviet Union and claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people.

The request for the new name change comes a year after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, decreed by Vladimir Putin.
