Portugal congratulates the winner of the legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau and wants to “deepen excellent cooperation”

The Portuguese Government “greets the Guinean people and institutions for the exemplary and participatory manner in which the democratic electoral process was developed.”

This Thursday, the Portuguese government congratulated the PAI-Terra Ranka coalition, which won the legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau by an absolute majority, and reiterated its “firm will to continue alongside” that country and “deepen the excellent bilateral cooperation ”.

In a note published on the Diplomatic Portal, the Portuguese executive salutes “all the candidates and party forces” who ran in the legislative elections in Guinea last Sunday and “congratulates the 102 members elected to the National Popular Assembly of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and the PADRE-Terra Ranka coalition, who obtained the majority of parliamentary votes and was commissioned by the President of the Republic [Umaro Sissoco Embalo] form a government in constitutional terms”.

Majority of PAI-Terra Ranka allows to govern alone, says Guinean president

“Following the preliminary statement of the Electoral Observation Mission of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries on the legislative elections of June 4 in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, the results of which were announced today [quinta-feira] announced, the Portuguese Government salutes the Guinean people and institutions for the exemplary and participatory manner in which the democratic electoral process was developed,” the note added.

The executive chaired by António Costa reiterates his “firm will and commitment to continue together with Guinea-Bissau and to deepen the excellent cooperation and bilateral association that unites” the two countries, “reflecting the fraternal friendship” between the two peoples, it still works.

The Inclusive Aliança Platform (PAI)-Terra Ranka coalition won the legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau by an absolute majority, obtaining 54 of the 102 parliamentary deputies, according to the provisional results announced today by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

The coalition is led by Domingos Simões Pereira, president of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which won the 2019 legislative elections without a majority with 47 deputies, and also includes Union for Change, the Party of the Convergence. Democratic Republic, the Guinean Democratic Movement and the Social Democratic Party.

President Sissoco Embaló admitted this Thursday having appointed Domingos Simões Pereira as prime minister, after saying otherwise during the electoral campaign.

“I know what I said, but a politician has to step back for the well-being of the nation,” said the head of state, in a message to the nation, at the Presidential Palace in Bissau.

The provisional results also indicate that the Movement for Democratic Alternation (Madem-G15), led by Braima Camará, obtained 29 deputies in the National Popular Assembly, two seats more than in 2019.

In third place was the Social Renewal Party (PRS) with 12 deputies, a large drop in relation to the results of the last legislative elections, when it obtained 21 seats.

Madem-G15 and PRS have been part of the Guinean government since 2020, after the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, dismissed Prime Minister Aristides Gomes, who headed the PAIGC executive.

The Guinean Workers’ Party (PTG), created at the end of 2021 and led by Botche Candé, obtained six deputies in its electoral debut.

In the 2019 legislative elections, Botche Candé was elected deputy for the PRS and assumed the portfolios of the Interior and Agriculture in the Government, which now ceases to function.

The big loser in the legislative elections is the United People’s Assembly – Democratic Party of Guinea-Bissau, led by the outgoing Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam, which won only one deputy, when in 2019 it elected five deputies.

Almost 900,000 Guinean voters went to the polls this Sunday to elect the new 102 deputies of the Popular National Assembly, from which the formation of the next Government will emerge, after the Guinean president dissolved parliament in May 2022.
