Government of Colombia and ELN guerrillas agree to a nationwide ceasefire for half a year

According to Danilo Rueda, it is the first time that the ELN has agreed to a bilateral ceasefire for half a year, “with monitoring and verification mechanisms.”

The Government of Colombia and the guerrilla National Liberation Army (ELN) reached an agreement on a ceasefire that will be throughout the country and will last six months, it was announced today.

The announcement was made by the High Commissioner for Peace, Danilo Rueda, on the radio station of the Colombian Presidency, moments before representatives of the Government and the guerrillas requested the postponement of the end of the third round of negotiations, scheduled for for today in the Cuban capital, Havana.

According to Danilo Rueda, it is the first time that the ELN has agreed to a bilateral ceasefire for half a year, “with monitoring and verification mechanisms.”

The third round of negotiations between the Colombian government and the ELN began at the end of April, after the previous rounds, in November in Venezuela and last February in Mexico, ended without agreement.
