The President of the Republic has already arrived in the destination country where he will remain for the next five days. The visit to the Canadian Portuguese community is part of the Head of State’s agenda.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, arrived in Canada this Wednesday for a five-day official visit that he hopes will be “a great moment of gratitude to the Portuguese community” in that country.
In statements to journalists, upon arriving at the hotel where he will stay in Montreal, the head of state said that during this visit he will also hold a meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, on Friday, in Toronto.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that, on this occasion, he intends to “reinforce the invitation made to him by the Portuguese Prime Minister to go to the Web Summit”, he is a bodybuilder and defender of science, technology and the future.
“But, beyond all that, it is the Portuguese presence and the connection with Portugal, in the past, in the present and looking to the future, which naturally marks this arrival in Canada, which I had been waiting for so much,” he stated.
The President of the Republic had at his side the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, who accompanied him on this visit.
This trip to Canada, where according to the 2021 census around 450,000 people of Portuguese origin live, coincides with the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the first officially registered Portuguese emigrants.
