Accident kills four members of Greek rescue team sent to Libya

The collision with another vehicle caused the death of four members of the Greek rescue team who were heading to Derna to help in operations after the flood that devastated the Libyan city.

Four members of a Greek rescue team sent to Libya died in a road accident while en route to the city of Derna, devastated by heavy rains and the collapse of two dams. This accident also caused the death of three members of a Libyan family, reported the Minister of Health of the government of eastern Libya.

Fifteen of the members of this Greek team were injured, of which seven are in critical condition, Othman Abduljaleel revealed in a press conference broadcast on television and cited by Reuters. The Greek armed forces announced that a bus carrying medical personnel collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, but did not confirm the existence of fatalities.

The causes and circumstances under which this accident occurred will be investigated in cooperation with the Libyan authorities, as a special operation is being prepared to gather Greek elements in the city of Benghazi to organize their repatriation, the Libyan minister added. The Greek Foreign Minister was not available for comment, Reuters reports. The Greek rescue team consisted of 16 people and three interpreters.

Floods in the city of Derna have already caused more than 11,000 deaths and authorities admit that the number could still rise sharply.
