Director Rita Azevedo Gomes receives the lifetime achievement award in Bilbao

Rita Azevedo Gomes will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Zinebi-Bilbao Documentary and Short Film Festival, in Spain. The Portuguese director will be honored with the Mikeldi of Honor.

Portuguese director Rita Azevedo Gomes will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Bilbao Documentary and Short Film Festival (Zinebi) in Spain on Friday, the organization revealed.

The filmmaker, who is distinguished with the Mikeldi of HonorAt the end of the 65th edition of Zinebi, he held a meeting with the press this Thursday in which he thanked him for the award, despite admitting that his cinema “has been somewhat forgotten and in the shadows.”

“It is very complicated to make films, because it is something that takes your entire life, consumes all your energy, but moments like this make you think that, despite everything, it was worth it,” said Rita Azevedo Gomes, quoted by Efe. agency.

For the festival, the cinema of Rita Azevedo Gomes is “proof of the possibilities of reconciling experimentation, documentary and narrative,” reads a statement.

Before journalists, Rita Azevedo Gomes said that for her cinema is “a way of being in life, of living, of feeling alive.”

“When I don’t make films, of course I still live, I go about my daily life, I’m with my family, but I don’t really feel alive. Cinema has that ability to make me feel alive,” she admitted.

Rita Azevedo Gomes, 71, a graduate in fine arts, has worked in film since the 1970s in various roles, from assistant director to costume designer.

He debuted as a director in 1990, with “The sound of the earth shaking”film that was part of the Basque festival programming.

She is also the author of films such as “Fragile like the world” (2001), “A woman’s revenge” (2012), “The Portuguese” (2018) and the most recent “Trio in Eb”based on a work by Eric Rohmer.

In an interview with the Lusa agency, at the end of 2022, Rita Azevedo Gomes said that one of the next projects would be the adaptation of the novel. “The sermon of fire”by Agustina Bessa-Luís.
