The European Parliament insists on appointing a candidate for president of the Commission

The proposal to elect the candidate for president of the European Commission is expected to be approved on Thursday in Strasbourg. The European elections will take place between June 6 and 9, 2024.

The European Parliament (EP) is expected to approve, on Thursday, in Strasbourg, France, a proposal on the election of the candidate (‘Spitzenkandidat’) for the presidency of the European Commission, insisting on the election between the leaders of the group list politicians.

The non-legislative resolution, from the EP’s Constitutional Affairs Committee, calls for a binding agreement between Parliament and the European Council on the so-called lead candidate process for the election of the president of the European Commission.

MEPs argue that the candidates at the top of the list, together with the presidents of the European political parties and their respective parliamentary groups, should enter into negotiations immediately after the elections to present a common candidate, before the European Council can present a proposal .

The European elections will take place between June 6 and 9, 2024, after which a new president of the European Commission will be elected.

In this plenary session, which will take place between Monday and Thursday, the EP will debate and vote on a project to modify the fundamental rules of the European Union, after the Conference on the Future of Europe.

The text, prepared in the Constitutional Affairs Committee by five co-rapporteurs representing a large majority, proposes a more bicameral system, in addition to granting the EP full right of legislative initiative and the right to co-legislate during the long period of the European Union. -Term budget.

The rapporteurs also propose, in the text that is debated on Tuesday and voted on the following day, an increase in the number of decisions taken by qualified majority in the Council.

Those same days, MEPs debate and vote on reducing the use and risk of pesticides, following the approval by the community executive of the authorization of the herbicide glyphosate for another ten years.
