In a party of this magnitude and with such a strong fashion component, it is clear that the dress code is not left to chance. In fact, it follows the theme of the exhibition and this year’s motto is given by the expression “El Jardín del Tiempo”, or “The Garden of Time” in Portuguese. The theme is directly inspired by the story “The Garden of Time” written by JG Ballard in 1962, which tells the story of a couple who lived in a villa with a terrace overlooking a flower garden that looked like glass. An angry crowd outside the villa approaches and, to restore tranquility, a time-reversing flower must be plucked from the garden until none remain. The story ends with the crowd invading the villa, which ends up becoming an abandoned property with a ruined garden with statues of the county couple wrapped in thorny plants.

This year Jennifer López, the actors Zendaya and Chris Hemsworth and the Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny will be together with Anna Wintour, the main organizer of this party, as hosts. Also joining them will be the fashion designer at the head of Loewe, Jonathan Anderson, and the CEO of Tik Tok, Shou Chew, who will be honorary presidents of the evening, as both brands sponsor this year’s Costume Institute exhibition. Every year, some prominent personalities in their areas of work or society and well known to the public are invited to be co-chairs of the event.

Inside the museum there are “Sleeping Beauties”

The Met Gala is a party that also marks the opening of the largest fashion exhibition of the year at the Metropolitan Museum, so guests have the privilege of taking a tour before it opens to the public on May 10.

This spring’s exhibition is called “Sleeping Beauties: The Awakening of Fashion,” which can be translated as “Sleeping Beauties: The Awakening of Fashion.” The inspiration is nature and the “natural world” serves as a “unifying visual metaphor” for the “ephemera of fashion,” the museum explained in a statement when the exhibition was announced. Around 250 pieces, clothing and accessories from different periods throughout 400 years of history will be exhibited, coming from the museum’s permanent collection. The chosen pieces share references to Nature and will be divided into three main “zones”: land, sea and sky, according to Vogue.

The exhibition will also explore conservation work on fashion pieces and this is where “sleeping beauties” come in, which are items of clothing that can no longer be worn on mannequins due to their fragility and will therefore be displayed in showcases. so that visitors can “observe the different states of deterioration, as if they were looking through a microscope.” In addition to beautiful fashion items, this exhibition will be enriched with artificial intelligence, videos, light projections and other media, in order to be a sensory experience for visitors.

“When a garment enters our collection, its status changes irrevocably. What was once a vital part of a person’s lived experience is now an immovable ‘piece of art’ that can no longer be worn, heard, touched or smelled,” explains Andrew Bolton, chief curator at the Costume Institute. “The exhibition strives to animate these works of art, awakening their sensory capabilities through a variety of technologies, giving visitors “sensory access to rare historical garments and rarefied contemporary fashions,” Bolton continues in a Changed press release. “By appealing to the widest possible range of human senses, the exhibition aims to reestablish the connection with the works on display as they were originally conceived: with vitality, dynamism and, ultimately, with life.” on May 10 and September 2.

On the day of the Met Gala, the Costume Institute started the day by sharing a video on social media that reveals a little of what happens inside the exhibition. The Vogue Runway page also allows the public to take a look at what is happening in “Sleeping Beauties: Fashion Awakening.”
