France. Republicans oust leader after Eric Ciotti agrees to deal with far-right

Eric Ciotti does not accept the decision made by the party. “None of the decisions taken at this meeting have legal consequences… I am and remain the president,” he says.

The Republicans, a right-wing conservative party, announced that they had “unanimously” excluded Eric Ciotti from their political family. The decision comes after the previous president supported the proposed alliance with the far-right Rassemblement National party (National Union) for early legislative elections. Eric Ciotti rejects the reported decision and accuses the party of having made this decision in an illegal meeting.

“We just unanimously excluded Eric Ciotti from our political family. He is no longer a Republican.” announced the French party on the social network X. The French newspaper The Figaro He adds that the party’s general secretary, Annie Genevard, and the head of the European Parliament list, François-Xavier Bellamy, will be the interim presidents.

This Wednesday’s decision comes after Eric Ciotti announced that he supported the proposal of the far-right party, Rassemblement National, to form an alliance for early legislative elections. “I launched an appeal to all patriotic political groups (…) that want to contribute to this recovery majority” and “I am glad that Eric Ciotti has responded favorably,” said Jordan Bardella, president of the party. The call arose in view of a possible union of left-wing parties for this next electoral moment, which occurs due to Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly after the collapse in the Europeans.

Following the party’s announcement, Ciotti took to social network X to reject the decision, accusing the party of organizing a meeting that violated the party’s statutes. “None of the decisions made at this meeting have legal consequences… I am and remain the president of our political party, elected by the members!”reads the publication.
