Council of the European Union formally approves Nature Restoration Law

The law establishes that all countries in the European Union must establish a National Restoration Plan. In this sense, 90% of terrestrial, coastal and marine habitats must be rehabilitated between now and 2050.

This Monday, in Luxembourg, the Environment Ministers of the European Union (EU) gave final approval to the Nature Restoration Law (LRN), which provides for the recovery, between now and 2030, of 30% of habitats in poor condition.

The LRN, an important part of the European Ecological Pact, had already been approved by the European Parliament, and this Monday it received the final green light from the Council of Environment Ministers of the EU, with the favorable vote of 20 member states, including Portugal. six against and one abstention.

The Nature Restoration Law establishes that All EU countries must present and adopt a National Restoration Plan.with specific objectives, which must provide for the restoration of at least 30% of terrestrial, coastal, marine and freshwater habitats in an unfavorable conservation status by 2030, 60% by 2040 and 90% by 2050.

EU Member States will still have to ensure that no deterioration occurs significant in areas subject to restoration.
