Cuba will join the complaint presented by South Africa before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel for an alleged crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Saturday.

In accordance with its firm and sustained commitment to support and contribute to the extent possible to legitimate international efforts to put an end to the genocide committed against the Palestinian people, the government of the Republic of Cuba has decided to intervene in the litigation initiated by the Republic of South Africa against the State of Israel before the International Court of Justice,” the ministry said in a statement.

The demand “has as its main objective to put an end to the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people as a consequence of the disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force by Israel,” Cuban diplomats said.

“Israel, with total impunity, protected by the complicity of the United States government, ignores its obligations as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention“he added.

For Cuba, genocide, apartheid, forced displacement and collective punishment “have no place in today’s world nor can they be tolerated by the international community.”

“Justice and respect for the Charter of the United Nations and international law must prevail,” he stressed.

The complaint was filed by South Africa at the end of December 2023. Since then, Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya and Mexico have joined the complaint. Spain announced, on June 6, that it would also join.

On May 24, the ICJ ordered Israel to immediately suspend military operations in the Gaza Strip, following South Africa’s request.

In January, the ICJ ordered Israel to do everything in its power to prevent any act of genocide and allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

The current conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the attack by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, which left around 1,200 dead and two hundred hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

Since then, Tel Aviv has launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip that has so far caused more than 37,000 deaths and more than 85,000 injuries, according to the authorities of the Palestinian enclave, controlled by Hamas since 2007.
