Kazakhstan’s president says relations with China are in a ‘golden period’

China is Kazakhstan’s largest trade and investment partner, with trade between the two countries reaching a record €38 billion last year.

Kazakhstan’s President Kasym-Yomart Tokayev said on Wednesday that relations with China are going through a “golden period of development” as he met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, who is on his fifth state visit to Astana.

“Kazakhstan attaches great importance to strengthening good-neighbourliness and centuries-old friendship between our countries (…). We can say that our bilateral relations have entered a new golden era of development.“the Kazakh leader said.

Kasym-Yomart Tokayev noted that China is the largest trade and investment partner of the Cazaquist and that, in the last 30 years, trade between the two countries has increased a hundredfold, reaching a record of 41 billion dollars (38 billion euros) last year.

“No matter how the international situation develops, our aspirations to preserve friendship with Kazakhstan, our determination to develop multifaceted cooperation and our commitment to supporting each other on core issues will remain unchanged,” Xi said.

The Chinese leader also expressed the hope that the two countries will make joint efforts to Build a more dynamic and content-rich community for the “common destiny of humanity”.

According to Xi, in the current international situation, this task takes on new significance as positive efforts are needed to create stability in the region and around the world.

The Chinese president will attend the 24th summit of leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) tomorrow, on the sidelines of which he will meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, who arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan this morning.

The SCO, created to collaborate on regional security and the fight against terrorism, ethnic separatism and religious extremism, is made up of China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
