Work about a secretary by Humberto Delgado presented in London

“Departure or Woman Without Fear” is inspired by a short memoir written by Arajaryr Campos, who was Humberto Delgado’s secretary and exile companion and with whom she was murdered by Pide.

The play “Partida ou a Mulher sem medo”, inspired by the figure of Humberto Delgado’s secretary Arajaryr Campos, written by Armando Nascimento Rosa, will take place on Friday at the Omnibus Theatrein London, the playwright told the Lusa agency.

Premiered in 2016 as a final exercise for theatre students at the University of Évora and performed again in Setúbal in 2018, the play stages the impossible encounter, which never took place in his lifetime, between “the brave” Arajacyr Campos and his daughter, the playwright added.

The performance of the play in London, entitled “Exit — A woman without fear“, which he repeats the following day, is the result of a collaboration between the playwright and professor and the British translator and playwright Susannah Finzi, who lived in Portugal in the 1970s, where she learned to speak Portuguese.

The translator, who has done some conversions of Portuguese dramas into English, will also present her play “Uma Reputation” (“Uma Reputation”) on the stage of the same English theatre (“The reputation“(in the original version) in which “he presents a dialogue between António de Oliveira Salazar and his confessor,” the author added.

Is about two “short” works, “very different in terms of theatrical options”since the British translator’s work has a “more realistic register” and the Portuguese playwright’s “is more metatheatrical,” he said.

In London the two pieces will be presented under the title “Two stories from the Salazar era”he said.

“Partida o mujer sin miedo” is inspired by a short memoir written by Arajaryr Campos, who was Humberto Delgado’s secretary and companion in exile and with whom she was murdered by PIDE on February 13, 1965.

The work of the “brave Arajaryr”, a figure who always remained in the shadows, was a testimony that he wanted to leave to his daughterwho at that time was a child, so that one day he could understand his mother’s mission, he observed.

“Through theatre I bring mother and daughter together, something that was not possible in life,” she stressed.

Collaborating with Susannah Finzi since she joined the cast of her work as a singer 10 years ago. “Blind eye”in company lisbon players, Armando Rosa is now returning to the London theatre where he presented another play in 2019.

Susannah Finzi is part of a project called “Out of the wings” which is linked to king schooland in which a group of academics participate, including people who translate Ibero-American dramaturgy into English.

And this project, which is organized by the structure. Modern culture, has a tradition of holding an annual event with performances and readings translated into EnglishHe added that the event also includes discussions on writing and translation for theatre.

In Lisbon, at the Aljube Museum, there will be an initiative in October that is “in mirror” the one currently taking place in London, with the presentation of the two dramatic texts, which will appear under the title “Two Pieces in Estado Novo”, revealed Armando Rosa Nacimiento.

In Lisbon, The play will feature a cast made up of students and alumni of the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinemawhere the playwright teaches classes, as well as at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, and will be directed, as in London, by Mariana Aristizábal Pardo, co-founder and co-director of Mariana Malena Theater Company a women-led Latin American theatre company based in London.

After the presentation of the pieces, Armando Nascimento Rosa will also present some songs from the repertoire of his digital album “O fado é Strange Joy”, which will soon be released in another format.

Accompanied by guitarist Alfredo Almeida, the author will also perform songs by other composers, such as “Cantares do Andarilho” by José Afonso, “Novo Fado da Severa”, with lyrics and original composition by maestro Frederico de Freitas and two songs by Carlos Ramos that will also be performed by Armando Nascimento Rosa, he told Lusa.

The presentation of the pieces and the musical performance in London takes place at the “Viva Portugal” event, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974.
