International leaders reacted to Starmer’s victory: Portugal, France, Australia, Canada, Israel and Ukraine wanted to strengthen ties. In the United States, Trump did not mention a new prime minister.

“Keir Starmer is a decent man with a public spirit,” said Rishi Sunak, describing the next British prime minister after he lost the general election on Thursday evening. If the Labour Party’s victory made headlines around the world, there were also reactions in the world of international politics.
In the UK, former Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss, who lost her MP seat in south-west Norfolk, acknowledged her defeat and said she needed “time” to think about her political future.
Speaking to the BBC, Truss admitted: “We are not delivering enough on the policies that people want.” The former Prime Minister was referring to the ability to lower taxes and curb immigration.
“I agree that I was part of that, that is absolutely true. But during our 14 years in power, unfortunately, we did not do enough to continue the legacy that he left us,” he said.
Asked if he intends to remain in the Conservative Party, he says he needs “a little time” to think. “I have a lot to think about.” It’s been a very, very busy few weeks.“I didn’t sleep last night, so give me some time, but I’m sure I’ll talk to you again,” he said.
In Portugal, France, Australia and Canada, leaders congratulated Starmer and left messages on social media. In the XFrench President Emmanuel Macron, who also faces an electoral battle on Sunday, said France would “continue the work started with the United Kingdom on bilateral cooperation, on peace and security in Europe, on climate and on AI.” [Inteligência Artificial]”, in the same line as luis montenegrowhich aims to “project into the future the most enduring alliance in the world.”

Also in XCanadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Keir Starmer on his “historic” victory and said there was still “much work ahead to build a more progressive and fair future for people on both sides of the Atlantic.”
In Australia, the Prime Minister Antonio Albanese he was “looking forward to working constructively with the next British government.”

For his part, the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump congratulated Nigel Farage, who manages to elect at least four MPs (including himself), without ever mentioning Starmer.
In a message on his social network Truth Social, Trump speaks of a “great victory.” “Nigel is a man who truly loves his country!”
Ukraine and Israel also reacted to the Labour Party victory: Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Keir Starmer and left a message of thanks to his “good friend” Sunak. “Ukraine and the United Kingdom have been and will remain reliable allies at all times. We will continue to defend and promote our common values of life, liberty and a rules-based international order.” wrote in Xwishing the new government “every success.” Zelensky also said he looked forward to the opportunity to work with Starmer in “close collaboration to strengthen the Ukraine-UK alliance” and restore international peace and security.
The Ukrainian leader also thanked Sunak for the “unwavering support of the British Government” under his leadership, and for sending tanks and missiles, as well as support in military training, recalling the bilateral agreement on security cooperation. There was a message from Israel that the country wants to deepen ties with the UK, with President Isaac Herzog saying he looks forward to working with Keir Starmer. in xHe stressed that he hoped for a joint effort to bring “the hostages home and build a better future for the region.”
