  • US ‘cautiously optimistic’ about Gaza ceasefire deal

White House spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday that the United States is “cautiously optimistic” about progress in negotiations toward a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

“We are cautiously optimistic that things are moving in the right direction,” Kirby said. “There is still a gap between the two sides. We believe that this gap can be narrowed and that is what Brett McGurk and CIA Director Bill Burns are trying to do right now.”

Brett McGurk, the US special envoy for the Middle East, and the CIA director are currently in Qatar participating in rounds of negotiations mediated by Qatar and Egypt with a view to reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

On Wednesday, an Israeli delegation including the country’s intelligence chief, David Barnea, left for Qatar for four days of negotiations.

Still on the table is a proposal from US President Joe Biden, which includes three phases to resolve the conflict: the release of hostages and prisoners, Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and reconstruction of the territory.

The incompatibility of positions between Israel and Hamas has so far been linked to the fact that the extremist group demands Israel’s permanent withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and Israel refuses to give up its objectives, which include the elimination of Hamas.

If Israel’s “red lines” are respected, the Israeli government says it is willing to sign an agreement for a temporary ceasefire.
