Super Typhoon Yagi kills at least four people in Vietnam

The super typhoon that hit the Asian country killed at least four people and injured nearly 80. It is “one of the most powerful typhoons” to hit the region in the last ten years.

At least four people were killed when Super Typhoon Yagi passed through Vietnam, local authorities said, and 78 were injured.

The typhoon, described by Vietnamese meteorological authorities as “one of the most powerful typhoons in the region in the last decade,” hit the Southeast Asian country after causing the death of at least three people and nearly 100 injured in the Chinese province of Hainan, according to AP.

In the Philippines, authorities have so far reported about two dozen deaths, according to the latest official data.

The Yagi struck the northern provinces of Quang Ninh (where Ha Long Bay is located) and Haiphong late this morning, leaving a trail of destruction, uprooting thousands of trees and sweeping anchored boats out to sea.

One of the victims in Hai Duong province was reportedly hit by a tree while standing on the street, local media reported, as cited by AFP.

In Haiphong, metal roofs and billboards were blown away across the city by the violent winds and heavy rains brought on by the typhoon.

A Haiphong resident told AFP of the terrifying moment she experienced when the typhoon hit: “I haven’t seen a typhoon of this magnitude for years. It was terrifying. I stayed at home after closing all the windows, but the sound of the wind and rain was unbelievable. I could even hear the sound of metal roofs breaking and falling onto the street,” said Tran Thi Hoa, 48.
