Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who is serving a prison sentence following multiple rape and sexual harassment cases, was rushed to hospital on Monday after complaining of chest pains.
According to ABC News, citing sources with knowledge of the proceedings, the 72-year-old former producer is undergoing emergency heart surgery.
Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, confirmed to the BBC that Weinstein was taken to Bellevue Hospital this morning.
Harvey Weinstein, who for decades was one of the biggest names in Hollywood, was incarcerated at Rikers Island prison in New York, serving a 16-year sentence for rape and sexual assault in California.
Weinstein previously became the epicenter of the Me Too movement when, in 2017, a journalistic investigation by The New York Times revealed that the producer had sexually abused several women in the film world and that he had paid women to keep quiet.
He was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York State, but in April of this year, the New York Supreme Court overturned the conviction and prosecutors announced their intention to force a retrial (although he will continue to serve the 16-year sentence in the California case).
Weinstein was expected to appear in court in New York this week as part of the new trial.
