Fact check: Did Kamala Harris have a membership card in the Communist Party USA?

Does Kamala Harris have a communist card, which she was given when she visited Moscow at just 20 years old? No, the image is easily manipulated and only Donald Trump sees her as a communist.

“Kamala Harris’ communist past and her trip to Russia” is the title of several posts that are being shared on social media. The criticism is directed at the current vice president of the United States and Democratic candidate for the White House.

Kamala replaced Joe Biden after the US president renounced his re-election in August of this year. It was a race without internal opposition, as Kamala Harris was the only name seeking the official nomination as a candidate for the presidency of the United States.

She thus became a direct opponent of Donald Trump in the November 5 elections, and by extension, the main target of the former American president’s criticism. Shortly after the vice president’s economic agenda became known, which includes a federal ban on food price manipulation, Trump insisted that the measures of the candidate for the White House are “communists and fascists“.

During his campaign across the US states, Trump has insisted on criticising and joining Harris on the far left. In a speech in Michigan, he said that the November 5 elections are “a choice between communism and freedom”.

You are not alone. Elon Musk, owner of the social network X, a known supporter of the Republican candidate, even published an image created with Artificial Intelligence that shows Kamala Harris in red uniformdecorated with the symbol of the Communist Party, the hammer and sickle.

The context is there. This is not the first time that personalities or leaders of the Republican Party have tried to criticize Kamala Harris, with accusations of wanting to implement a communist society in the United States. And the statements of Trump and Musk have strength on social media.

The Facebook posts show a document written in Russian, with a black-and-white photograph of a young Kamala Harris. In the description, the post explains that “on August 19, the official channel of the Archives of the Russian Federation broadcast the personal card of Kamala Harris when, in her youth, she was member of Communist Party of the United States“.

The card was given to the current US vice president when she allegedly travelled to Moscow in 1984, when she was 20 years old. Kamala was allegedly a member of the Communist Party for 11 years, until 1991.

Facebook post about a card of an alleged member of the Communist Party with a photo of Kamala Harris.

But is there any connection between Kamala Harris and the US Communist Party? No. The alleged membership card with the photo of “Comrade Harris” was created with the help of the Stalinavas website, which creates several models of alleged membership cards of the Communist Party, which can be downloaded and filled in with the respective name or date of birth. The identification number, the way the stamp is placed on the card and the writing that can be read on the right page are identical to the card that appears with a photograph of Kamala Harris. A search with the TinEye tool for the manipulated image of the alleged militant’s card leads to dozens of other results, several of them with different images.

But beyond the doctored card, there are other inconsistencies. The photograph of Kamala Harris, which appears on the card, was not taken in 1984, as can be seen in the text accompanying the publication, but in 1986. This is what can be read in a New York Times profile, written in 2020, which uses that same photograph as a headline.

And beyond the criticism from opponents, it is not possible to find any information that Kamala Harris has ever crossed paths with the Communist Party of the United States in the past.

Conclusion

It is not true that Kamala Harris is a member of the Communist Party of the United States. The image is manipulated and was created through a website that allows you to fill out the form. alleged militant cards of the communist parties, with the name and photograph of your choice. There is no information that the current vice president of the United States has a past linked to American communism, regardless of her age.
