Lula slips in the bathroom, goes to the hospital and cancels trip to Russia for the BRICS summit

The Brazilian president slipped in the bathroom and went to the hospital with injuries to the back of his head. He had to cancel his visit to Kazan, Russia, to attend the BRICS summit.

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, canceled this Sunday his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit, which will be held this week, on medical advice, after suffering a “domestic” accident following the videoconference meeting.

On Saturday, Lula da Silva was admitted to the Sírio-Libanês hospital in Brasilia with injuries to the back of his head, writes Folha de São Paulo, which confirmed that the Brazilian president slipped in the bathroom. He never lost consciousness. However, they had to receive five stitches in the head.

In the hospital’s statement, after an evaluation by the medical team, Lula da Silva was recommended to “avoid long-distance air travel” and that, however, he could “carry out other activities.”

For this reason, the Brazilian presidency indicated, in a statement, that Lula da Silva, “on medical advice, will not travel to the BRICS Summit in Kazan, due to a temporary impediment to long-term air travel.”

The Brazilian president will participate via videoconference in the meeting of the group of emerging countries, which will be held between October 22 and 24 in the Russian city of Kazan, adds the statement from Planalto, Brazil’s presidential palace.

Lula da Silva will also fulfill his “normal working hours” at the Palacio do Planalto, in Brasilia, the statement reads.

The BRICS, whose original members were Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are expanding, after including four more countries this year: Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.

During the meeting, the leaders of the member countries will define the criteria for other nations to join the bloc as associates.

At the summit, Brazil will assume leadership of the BRICS for one year, starting January 1, 2025.

This Sunday’s statement from Planalto recalls that “in 2014, during the [anterior] The Brazilian presidency of the BRICS, the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Agreement were created.”

Brazil, Russia, India and China created the BRIC group in 2006, to defend greater representation of emerging and developing countries in international organizations. South Africa’s accession in 2010 added the letter S to the acronym.
