Chinese president visits Peru and Brazil for Apec and G20 summits

Xi Jinping will visit Lima and Rio de Janeiro in November to attend the Apec and G20 summits. The White House also confirmed that Joe Biden will participate in both meetings.

The Chinese president will travel next week to Peru and Brazil to participate in the summits of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (Apec) and the G20, where his North American counterpart is expected to be present, Beijing announced this Friday.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping will visit Lima from November 13 to 17 and Rio de Janeiro from November 17 to 21, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying reported in a statement.

The White House also confirmed that US President Joe Biden will participate in both summits.

In Peru, Xi Jinping “will participate in the 31st APEC economic leaders meeting and pay a state visit”according to Chinese diplomacy. This summit brings together representatives from 21 member countries every year.

He also participates in the G20 summit in Brazil. Since returning to power last year, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has tried to maintain a delicate balancing act. It is trying to deepen ties with Beijing, while also seeking to improve relations with Washington.

HE Brazil and China are trying to position themselves as mediators in the Ukraine war. Unlike Western nations, they did not sanction Russia for the invasion.

In June, Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin’s visit to China was seen as paving the way for Brazil to join China’s “Belt and Road” initiative..

This important program, launched in 2013, aims to build infrastructure and develop maritime, road and rail connections between different continents.

Several South American countries have already joined this initiative, which is a central element of Xi Jinping’s strategy to increase China’s influence abroad.

These countries include Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
