Dozens of countries, including Portugal, reaffirmed this Tuesday at the United Nations (UN) headquarters their support for the “sovereignty, independence and unity of Ukraine” and demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory.

“This war must end,” urged the Ukrainian ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, when reading a statement on behalf of fifty states on the occasion of the thousandth day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“We reaffirm our support for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine”stressed the diplomat, surrounded by representatives of several kyiv allies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Portugal, France, Japan, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Argentina, South Korea and the European Union.

The statement, read in New York, reiterated the demand that Moscow cease the use of force against Ukraine and withdraw. “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraws its military forces from Ukrainian territory within its recognized international borders.”

States further condemned Russia’s continued indiscriminate attacks on densely populated residential areas and critical civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, which are causing daily death tolls, displacement and destruction.

“A thousand days of war are a tragic reminder of the need to remain committed to ensuring that international law prevails not only in Ukraine, but wherever it is challenged,” the signatories added.

Questioned by journalists about the escalation of the conflict in recent hours, the Ukrainian ambassador maintained that the only way to get Moscow to accept negotiations is through “force.”

“We have to get the Russians to the negotiating table and the only way to do that is by force,” Kyslytsya argued.

“We have to be united to avoid war. I don’t think anyone in the Russian leadership is brave enough to commit suicide. “People in Russia are very weak,” the diplomat added, commenting on the escalation of rhetoric about the use of nuclear weapons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Tuesday that expands the possibility of using nuclear weapons, after the United States authorized kyiv to attack Russian soil with long-range missiles supplied by Washington.

The war in Ukraine began a thousand days ago with the Russian invasion of February 24, 2022.

The conflict has caused the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.
