Portugal condemns the attack attributed to Hezbollah against the UN in Lebanon

Portuguese diplomacy condemned the recent attacks on UN facilities in Lebanon, calling them a “clear violation of international law.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned this Friday an attack attributed to the Shiite group Hezbollah with ‘rockets’ against facilities of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which left four Italian soldiers injured.

In a brief note, the Portuguese diplomacy considered that “attacks against United Nations facilities are unacceptable” and He warned that this was “a clear violation of international law.”

Four Italian soldiers were seriously injured in a new attack on the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL and the Government of Italy reported, indicating the probable responsibility of Hezbollah, which has been at war with Israel for more than a year.

UNIFIL confirmed that four of its international soldiers were injured by two rockets that hit a bunker and a logistics area, “causing significant damage.”

In turn, Hezbollah declared that this Friday it fired “a barrage of rockets” against Israeli soldiers in Chamaa, in southern Lebanon.

In a statement, the Italian Ministry of Defense indicated that the soldiers were slightly injured “after the explosion of two 122 mm ‘rockets’ that hit the UNP 2-3 base in Chama-a,” which houses the Italian contingent and the Western Sector Command.

“I will try to speak with the new Israeli Defense Minister [Israel Katz]”It has been impossible since he took office to ask him to avoid using UNIFIL bases as a shield,” said Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, quoted in the statement.

According to a UNIFIL spokesperson, the The UN force recorded more than 30 incidents in October that resulted in property damage or injuries, including about twenty due to Israeli gunfire or actions.

More than ten thousand international peacekeeping troops are stationed in southern Lebanon, where UNIFIL has been deployed since 1978 to monitor a buffer zone with Israel.

After a year of exchanges of fire in the cross-border region, Israel entered open war against Hezbollah on September 23, launching an intense bombing campaign in Lebanon.

Since October 1, Israeli ground forces have entered southern Lebanon, where the conflict has killed more than 3,500 people and left more than 1.2 million displaced.
