Qatari Foreign Minister on investment in Russia: “We are investing on a commercial basis, not a political one.”

Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani confirmed that the Qatar Investment Authority will not abandon projects in Russia, but also does not plan to participate in new projects.

Al-Thani’s statement came in response to a question raised during an interview with the German newspaper “Handelsblatt” about whether the Qatar Investment Authority should stop investing in VTB Bank, Rosneft and other Russian companies such as western companies.

The Qatari minister said: “In any case, we are not looking for new opportunities or new partnerships with Russia. The Qatar Investment Authority is a long -term investor and we invest on a commercial basis, not a political one. ”

He indicated that the Qatar Investment Authority would not leave Russia, and Al Thani expressed hope that the situation would change “soon”.

He also stressed that although the VTP is subject to Western sanctions, the Qatar Investment Authority follows all sanctions procedures and does not violate them.

Under pressure of Western sanctions imposed on Russia, foreign companies announced their withdrawal or suspension of their business in Russia For its part, Moscow confirmed that the vacuum created by the departure of companies will not be left empty and filled by local companies or from abroad.
