Malaysia has stopped exporting poultry

Starting next month (June 2022), Malaysia has decided to stop poultry exports until production and prices stabilize. The Malaysian government has also agreed to cancel import licenses for wheat.

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaqoub has announced that Malaysia will stop exporting 3.6 million chickens per month from next month (June 1, 2022), and will also cancel the approved wheat import permit until to stabilize production and prices.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia added that the need for an approved permit for the import of poultry and wheat has been removed until production and prices are stable, to give priority to Malaysian citizens.

The government has also limited the price of chicken to US $ 2.8 and will introduce more slaughterhouses overseas to boost domestic supplies amid rising prices and cost of living, according to a statement on Monday.

These decisions came days after Ismail canceled approved permit regulations for the import of food products, including poultry, coconut and evaporated milk, to ensure adequate food supply in the country.

The move is likely to hit neighboring Singapore, which gets a third of its poultry supply from Malaysia, according to data from the Singapore Food Agency.

Ismail said the Malaysian Antimonopoly Authority was investigating reports of cartels (alliances) controlling chicken prices and production, and promised to take drastic measures to combat it.
