The US division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Group has pleaded guilty to a criminal conspiracy and will pay $300 million in a deal with prosecutors to end a years-long U.S. Department of Justice investigation into emissions fraud, court documents show.
Under the agreement, the group’s US division, now part of the Stylantis group, will pay this hefty amount as a criminal penalty for its efforts to evade emissions requirements for more than 100,000 Ram light trucks and Jeep SUVs in the United States.
“The US division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has been engaged in a multi-year scheme to mislead regulators and customers in the United States,” Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Pulait-Temh said, adding that the department will hold companies seeking to generate profits to account for disclosure, candor, good governance and timely resolution of issues.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmonds in Detroit has set July 18 as the date for sentencing, and the settlement includes a $203.6 million fine and a $96.1 million fine.
