Russian gas to Germany suspended for 10 days for pipeline maintenance

The supply of gas from Russia to Germany has been interrupted for ten days since Monday due to maintenance work on the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea.

Gas will stop flowing and supply is scheduled to resume in the early hours of July 21.

However, officials are very concerned that the supplies are not restoreddue to the war in Ukraine.

Russia’s state-owned company Gazprom has already significantly reduced supply volumes through the 1,200-kilometre gas pipeline between Russia and northern Germany, citing delays in repair work. Moscow blamed Western sanctions for the delays, an argument rejected by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The pipeline was only being used at 40% capacity, leading to further price increases in the gas market, according to Germany’s Federal Network Agency.

The operator has scheduled ten days for check and repair or recalibrate power supply, fire and gas protection systems and certain valves.

The maintenance work comes at a time when Germany urgently seeks to reduce its reliance on Russian gas as it fills up storage tanks for the winter.
