Retail sales shrink to 3.3% in the second quarter

Retail sales grew by 3.3% year-on-year in the second quarter of this year, slowing down from the 12.9% rise observed in the previous quarter, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported on Friday.

In June, retail sales increased 3.3% in volume, compared to 2.4% in May, according to the INE.

The statistical institute explains that the the turnover index in retail trade showed a year-on-year increase of 3.3% in June, accelerating by “0.9 percentage points (pp)” compared to the rise registered in the previous month.

For the evolution of the retail trade billing index in the month of June, the The INE indicates that food products fall by 0.4%although 0.4 pp higher than the previous month.

In the case of non-food products, there was an acceleration of 1.2 pp, for an increase of 6.1%, it adds.

In monthly terms, the aggregate index had a down 1.9% in Junecompared to a rise of 1.9% in the previous month.

The employment, remuneration and hours worked indices, for their part, presented year-on-year increases of 2.9%, 4.7% and 1.1%, respectively, compared to increases of 2.8%, 7.6% and 2 .2% in May, in the same order.
