The cogeneration plants installed in the industrial sector are increasingly stopping or reducing electricity production due to the rise in the price of gas and the instability that exists in this market. Data from the General Directorate of Energy and Geology indicate that, in June, Gas demand for cogeneration fell by 39%, compared to the previous moving year (until June 2021). Data from the association that represents almost the entire sector, Cogen, confirm that in the last quarter of 2021 production fell by 40%, a situation attributed to the escalation in gas prices that worsened after the invasion of Ukraine in February of this year. year.
The president of Cogen Portugal – Portuguese Association for Energy Efficiency and Promotion of Cogeneration, Miguel Gil Mata, confirms to the Observer that the cogeneration plants are stopped, at least for a few hours, especially in the industries most exposed to natural gas, such as ceramics, glass or textiles. The reasons for the reduction in the production of these units are various, but at the origin is the same problem: the increase in the price of gas.
