Senator Angus King (I-ME) spoke on Friday about the so-called “Reducing Inflation Act,” which Democrats, economists and the Congressional Budget Office say will do little to curb high inflation.
King argued that the law would “reduce federal debt by $300 billion,” so he enlisted the support of Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kirsten Cinema (D-AZ).
“It will definitely reduce the deficit,” King said. “Actually, one of the bill’s provisions is to reduce the federal debt by $300 billion. This is one of the things that Joe Manchin, I and others insist on being part of the bill. So, yes, I don’t think there will be any problems with numbers. There are some important questions about what you can do policy-wise with the compromise bill, and that’s what the MP did this week, but last night was a big deal and now it looks like we have one final deal where you get 50. votes.”
“I think it looks good,” he added. “So this is the same process Republicans used five years ago to dramatically lower corporate taxes, for example. So I think these obstacles will be removed.”
