The French Energy Transition Minister said today that the executive is preparing a new ceiling for the increase in electricity prices in 2023.
In 2022, the maximum was set at 4%.
“The Government has assumed its responsibilities by cushioning the rise in the price of electricity. Without the mechanism that we put in place, the increase would not have been 4%, but 40%. Our initiative will be identical next year”, said Agnés Pannier-Runacher, in an interview with RTL radio.
The minister said that news about the new limit will be released “in the coming days”, adding that the measure is being prepared in consultation with Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire and Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.
Agnés Pannier-Runacher also clarified that the price cap will be offset by new revenue, in order to maintain the deficit target at 5% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2023.
The official also addressed the issue of damaged nuclear reactors, about half of the 56 in the country, hoping that most will be reopened.
At a European level, the minister guaranteed that she is in favor of requesting a contribution from energy producers, arguing that their costs “have practically not changed”, despite the fact that consumer prices have skyrocketed.
