Five telefilms and five series in Portuguese fiction news on RTP

Five telefilms directed by women and five fiction series, inspired by true stories and literary works, will debut in the coming months on public television, according to the new programming presented this Wednesday by RTP.

In the field of national fiction, RTP will premiere five telefilms, from a project by the production company UKbar Filmes entitled “Told by Mulheres”, in which ten Portuguese women take on the direction of as many films based on literary works and filmed in a dozen places around the world Center of Portugal.

The first five telefilms to be released on the air are “A betrayal of Father Martinho”, by Ana Cunha, based on a play by Bernardo Santareno, “When the devil prays”, by Fabiana Tavares, inspired by the homonymous novel by Mário de Carvalho, and “The Empty Closets”, by Cristina Carvalhal, an adaptation of a novel by Maria Judite de Carvalho.

Also added are the telefilms “Os Vivos, o morte eo Peixefrito”, by actress Daniela Ruah, based on a book by Ondjaki, and “Vizinhas”, by Sofia Teixeira Gomes, based on a story by Teolinda Gersão.

Of the fiction series proposals, the first to premiere on RTP, on the 21st, is “Cuba Libre”, a historical fiction by Henrique Oliveira, based on real events, about Annie Silva País, daughter of the last PIDE director. The series stars Beatriz Godinho.

Published almost 150 years ago, the novel “O Crime of Father Amaro”, by Eça de Queirós, is adapted for the first time into a television series, directed by Leonel Vieira, divided into six episodes. The cast is headed by José Condessa and Bárbara Branco.

After being released in a movie theater as a feature film, João Botelho’s project to adapt Saramago’s novel “O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis” is now becoming a four-episode miniseries for RTP.

Public television will also premiere Abandonados, a historical fiction series by Francisco Manso about the Japanese invasion of East Timor in 1942.

Shot in Madeira, the series is based on the book “Timor na Segunda Guerra Mundial – Diário do Tenente Pires”, by the historian António Monteiro Cardoso, guided by the life of the Portuguese officer Manuel Pires, then administrator of Baucau, who tried to withdraw from the territory to the largest possible number of Timorese, Portuguese and Australians, before the entry of the Japanese.

In a Portuguese-Spanish co-production, RTP will also screen the series “Motel Valkirias”, a ‘thriller’ by Jorge Queiroga and Álex Sampaio about “the lives of three women, with great economic and personal problems, who fortuitously cross paths, against the backdrop of a cross-border motel between Galicia and Portugal”, describes the public broadcaster.

Marina Mota, Maria João Bastos, Tomás Alves and Rui Morrison are among the actors in this production.

In the coming months, RTP will also present “Viagem a Portugal”, a program hosted by Brazilian comedian Fábio Porchat, based on the homonymous play by writer José Saramago. This is a project that is part of the centenary celebrations of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
