Digi and Cellnex have established a “long-term strategic partnership” for the development of the 5G network in Portugal. This is one of Digi’s first public moves in the Portuguese market, after news broke last year that the operator will enter Portugal.
When the 5G auction concluded in October last year, Digi was one of the companies with a lot of spectrum, integrating the group of new “players” in the Portuguese market. The Romanian operator invested more than 67 million euros in the purchase of 5G licenses in the auction of the Portuguese regulator Anacom.

Through a statement, Cellnex explains that the alliance will be effective at the national level and that it includes the “implementation of two thousand PoPs (Points of Presence) by the end of 2023”. And, “although the partnership is at an early stage, the first few hundred infrastructures have already been made available to Digi.”
“In line with the significant investments that Cellnex is making in the 12 countries in which it is present, to allow a faster and cheaper implementation of 5G, Cellnex Portugal is investing significantly in both supporting incumbents and new market entrants (…)”, can be read in the press release released this Thursday.
“This association is proof of the pro-competitive nature of Cellnex as a whole, a neutral, industrial and independent position, which allows Portugal to take advantage of a more economical rational use of its telecommunications infrastructure”, says Nuno Carvalhosa, CEO of Cellnex Portugal, cited in a statement.
The Spanish Cellnex arrived in Portugal in 2020 having expanded its presence in the Portuguese market by acquiring antennas from operators such as Nos or Altice.
