First, failures in the Nord Stream 2, recorded in the early hours of Monday. Several hours later the Nord Stream 1 fails. These two pipelines start from Russia, have their last stop in Europe and, despite none of them are currently supplying gas to the Europeans — which means that the incidents do not, for the time being, have an immediate impact on Europe’s gas supply — its pipelines continue to contain gas. And it was precisely in three conduits of these two gas pipelines that at least three leaks were detected in the middle of the Baltic Sea.

“The reasons are being investigated,” Switzerland-based operator Nord Stream AG said in a statement on Tuesday. Investigations into the “unprecedented” damage are still ongoing, but both sides, Russia and Europe, have already issued warnings. The authorities Europeans say they suspect sabotageblaming the Russians and their energy threat; the Kremlin stresses that this is a very serious matter and that no possibility should be ruled out.
