Large-scale use carries significant risks, but most modern power systems choose this formula because it has higher energy density as well as more efficient charging and discharging. However, lithium-ion batteries have a volatile, flammable electrolyte. Therefore, despite the measures to prevent fire, all combustible materials are still present. Fire can be accelerated by chain reactions known as thermal runaway.
Large batteries consist of several cells joined together. There is a constant current flowing inside and generating heat. Failure in a component cascades rapidly if there are no obstructions between components. As advanced (and critical) system cooling equipment is installed, it consumes and de-powers the actual powertrain. Also, while charging, a layer of lithium metal can form on the surface and dendrites or needle structures can grow, causing short circuits.
There are other considerations. For example, the Arizona State Commission, in its review of battery failures in 2019 and 2012, found that “fires with a flame length of between 10 feet and 15 feet and a flame length of 50 to 75 feet appeared as if they were ignited by flammable liquids from cabinets. After one event, it took about three months to clear the trapped energy.
Fires have been a big problem for Tesla vehicles in recent years.
