Carlos Mineiro Aires, former president of Engineers, will be the president of the follow-up commission created by the Government to follow up on the work of the technical commission that will be in charge of the strategic environmental evaluation of the location of the new airport. The information was provided by Jornal de Negócios.
The former president of the Engineers heads the Superior Council of Public Works, one of the three entities chosen to appoint the coordinator of the technical commission. The remaining entities are the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities and the National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development, which are headed by António de Sousa Pereira and Filipe Duarte Santos, respectively.
Jornal de Negócios reports that Carlos Mineiro Aires is seen as close to António Costa and supporter of Alcochete as the location of the new airport. In fact, Mineiro Aires has already publicly expressed this position.
Last week, Pedro Nuno Santos, Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, announced that the technical commission created by the executive for the new airport will have five options. The list includes Humberto Delgado as an international airport and Montijo as a complement; Montijo as the main airport and Humberto Delgado as a complement; Alcochete replacing the Humberto Delgado airport; Humberto Delgado as principal and Santarém as complement and, finally, Santarém replacing Humberto Delgado.
