Inflation. Marcelo says that “it is too early” to project more positive scenarios for 2023

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered this Wednesday that the drop in inflation by 0.2 percentage points is “slightly positive“, but warned that it is still “too early” to project more positive scenarios for next year.

“The news was slightly positive, to be honest. They were positive because they go down, not up, contrary to what happened in the previous month, and if confirmed, the trend that started in the United States of America and is appearing in some European countries“, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on the sidelines of the 12th edition of the SME Innovation Meeting, organized by COTEC, at the Cruise Terminal of the Port of Leixões, in Matosinhos.

In statements to journalists, the head of state defended, however, that it is too early to project more positive scenarios for 2023.

“It’s early. Let’s say you hope the rise has stopped and that it is the start of a reversal, change of pathbut we need to see another month,” he said, noting, however, that the next few months may eventually reflect price increases.

According to the quick estimate published today by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the interannual variation rate of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell to 9.9% in November, compared to 10.1% in October.

According to the INE, “based on the information already collected, the interannual variation rate of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will have decreased to 9.9% in Novemberrate 0.2 percentage points lower than that observed in the previous month”.

Asked if a possible downward trend in the inflation rate would make it possible to avoid a corrective budget, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted that the State Budget for 2023 is “flexible” and that it was “designed to be moldable to various appearances????????

“The budget was designed to avoid amendments,” he stressed, recalling, however, that the document has not yet entered into force and that he has not yet received it.

“I won’t receive it until around Christmas, the 16th, 17th or 18th. [de dezembro]???????? Thereafter, it enters into force on the 1st of [de janeiro] and hopefully it will be flexible to adapt to so much economic doubt”, he added.
