The government takes the first step towards the privatization of TAP. Approved resolution that allows to know the value of the company

The initial kick has been given for the privatization of TAP. Before the process itself, it is necessary to know the value of the company. And that is what the Council of Ministers approved this Thursday. In a press conference, the finance and infrastructure ministers announced that the government approved a resolution that obliges the finance ministry and Parpública to carry out two independent evaluations of TAP. These financial evaluations are a mandatory precondition for the privatization of the company.

The evaluations precede the next legal steps, which will be a decree law and a resolution of the Council of Ministers, which will define the specific aspects of the privatization process and the terms of reference. These steps should be taken, said Fernando Medina, before the summer, “around July”, despite considering that it is still “early” to advance with a schedule. That is why Fernando Medina did not say which part of TAP will be privatized. It will be the decree-law that defines these issues and “everything will be scrupulously complied with”.

Along with Fernando Medina, Minister João Galamba highlighted that the evaluation has two dimensions: classic aeronautics, the dimension of the hub and connectivity, and another that has to do with the current context of energy transition. The Minister of Infrastructure highlighted the importance of the Lisbon hub in this regard. “The Lisbon hub is today an important aeronautical hub and will be, in the future, a hub for the production of synthetic fuels that offer important opportunities for TAP and is one of the dimensions to be evaluated”, he added.
