German multinational begins construction of a photovoltaic plant in Coimbra

A German multinational began on Tuesday the construction of a photovoltaic plant in Coimbra, with the capacity to annually produce more than 71 Gwh (Gigawatt) of clean energy, enough to supply 21,000 homes.

It’s about the Photovoltaic Solar Plant Shiplocated in the parish of Cernache, which will be built by Aquila Clean Energy, Aquila Capital’s renewable energy platform in Europe, which develops and operates renewable energy projects in the field of solar and wind energy.

The solar plant, scheduled to come into operation in 2024, “will increase green power generation capacity in the municipality of Coimbra and will avoid the emission of a total of 57,000 tons of CO2 each year, thanks to a production of 71 GWh of renewable energy per year,” the company said in a statement sent to the Lusa news agency.

“Our ambition is to play a key role in Portugal’s energy transition and accelerate the decarbonisation of the economy in a sustainable way. Therefore, this project is a new step in creating this positive environmental and social impact that we want to have in the regions where we operate,” said Manuel Fonseca e Silva, from Aquila Clean Energy in Portugal, quoted in the statement.

According to the head of development and construction, the company mission at the Barcos plant “it is also shaped by the preservation of biodiversity and local heritage, characteristics that distinguish the operation and, of course, the creation of green jobs that will promote this new solar plant.”

“This project will also have a component of conservation of local heritagethrough the conservation of existing shepherd’s shelters in the area where the plant is located, and an intensive monitoring of the existing biodiversity will be ensured, thus seeking to reduce the impact of this structure”.

Aquila Clean Energy currently manages a order book of around 900MW (Megawatt) in Portugal, in photovoltaic solar energy projects, “both in the development phase and already in operation”.
