In the message, Augusto Santos Silva reminded the importance of the Schuman Declarationwhich started the process of European construction that led to the European Union, and underlined the common values of the EU.
“European peace is based on adherence to common values: the democratic rule of law, human rights. And it is on these common values that we build a process of development, of political union, of peace on the European continent”, he added.
The RA President also said that these common values representing the European Union are commemorated every May 9 (Europe Day).
Europe Day marks the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declarationpronounced in Paris, in 1950, by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of France (Robert Schuman), exposing his vision of a new form of political cooperation in Europe.
This vision went through creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), with a view to a common market for coal and steel between the founding countries (France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg), and this community was established with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on April 18, 1951.
