Banco de Portugal pays a dividend of 238 million to the State (and it should be the last dividend for the next few years)

The Bank of Portugal reduced its profit in 2022 by 42%, to 297 million, and, thanks to this result, it will pay a dividend of 238 million euros to the State. This is the lowest transfer since 2016, but it is still in line with the 240 million that were provided for in the General State Budget for this year. The next few years, however, will be marked by a deterioration of the Bank of Portugal’s accounts and it is only thanks to a “cushion” that losses are not expected. In this context, in the coming years the Ministry of Finance should not depend on dividends.

Last year, in 2022, Banco de Portugal had paid dividends for 406 million (on the result of 2021). Although these 238 million are the lowest dividend since 2016When the State received 186.3 million euros for the 2015 benefits of the Bank of Portugal, the supervisor highlighted in a statement that, “considering current personal income tax, 371 million euros were delivered to the State” in total.
